How to Cope with Coronavirus Anxiety

By: Meghana Nakkanti Everyone is different, faces different problems, and has different methods of coping- the pandemic is no exception. Some are very anxious, while others are calm. Some prefer staying at home, while others love to be around people and spend time outside. While it’s acceptable and completely normal to have some fear, it’s also important to make sure that the fear doesn’t become overwhelming and cause problems. Let’s start off by learning about the basics of a virus. This information can be seen on the Centers for Disease Control website. Viruses are not capable of growth or reproduction, or even movement. They are parasites and on their own, they are doomed to die. Remember, even though these are nonliving, we still need to stay 6+ feet from others, avoid ill people, wear a mask, and frequently wash our hands. Here are two facts to remember: Fact #1 : If a virus is not passed along to a host, it will die. This means that by social distancing, sanitizing, and practicing hygiene, we can avoid the virus.

Fact #2 : A strong immune system is capable of killing off the virus, and we can do things to boost our immune system. Some ways to boost an immune system would be getting more sleep, drinking water, and getting exercise! With this information, it is now much easier to focus on the realities of the coronavirus, rather than just speculation and hype. With a major block out of the way, we can answer the next question. What can we do to reduce our anxiety? Exercising every day is a great way to not only boost your immune system, but also improve your health overall. Now, exercise doesn’t have to just be running. It can be hiking, walking, playing sports, or even following a YouTube exercise video. Make sure to get some fresh air frequently as well. Being cooped up in a home or room for too long can be detrimental to our health. Find a park, a trail, or a beach, and spend time outside! Be sure to use sunscreen and cover up. Another way to reduce anxiety is to laugh! You can read, watch, or listen to comedy and movies. This can also help you take your mind off of things and relax. The best way to reduce anxiety is to have a mindset. Be patient and optimistic, even if it is really difficult. Whether that means having a positive attitude, helping others, writing, or maybe even doing nothing, the best way is to see the glass half full.
