Staying Mentally Healthy During Quarantine

By: Ishani Srivastava

The world may be going through a tough time, but that doesn’t mean that you, yourself, and your health don't matter. On that note, staying physically healthy is super important during quarantine, but so is staying mentally healthy. Here are some ways to boost your mood during this time:

Go out for a walk/run.

Going outside for a walk or run will help clear your mind from thoughts of stress, anxiety, or insecurity, even if it’s for 10 minutes. Enjoy the view nature gives you, admire the birds in the sky, and bless your ears with the sound of rustling leaves in the trees. Let your thoughts be what you experience with your five senses when outside: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.

Listen to upbeat/hype music.

You don’t have to be in a good mood or a bad mood to listen to upbeat music. Music can always help you look at the positive side of things and make you happy. Sing along! Or if it’s rap, then try your best :)

Dance.

Maybe you don’t know how to, or maybe you only know all the recent tik tok dances, but who cares? Try it, dance until you can’t feel your legs. You might be sweaty and exhausted afterward, but you’ll also feel great and refreshed.

Meditate.

It might sound cringey or it might not to you, but give it a shot because you never know how much it could help. Meditating could help calm your mind and give you a nice break from the outside world. Explore your own world and let yourself have some me-time. Wouldn’t hurt to try, would it?

Video Call Friends or Family. Everything is ten times harder with no social interaction. You may not be able to meet in person, but video calling your friends or family is the solution to that. Seeing and hearing your loved ones can lift your spirits, and remind you that you are not alone in this.

Write a letter to an old friend. Remember that friend you haven’t talked to in years? Send him/her a letter (even if they live close by). Believe it or not, sending a letter is much more effective than sending a text message. It shows more effort and affection put into what you say because you wrote a letter, instead of easily typing a message. Even though you haven’t talked to that friend in a while, a change might feel better than you expect.

Write a story.

Get lost in your imagination! Make up random stuff and put it together in a story. It doesn’t have to make sense! Writing a story will give you something to do and might give you a passion for writing; You never know.

Write song lyrics.

Release your emotions. Writing song lyrics is a great way to express any feelings you’ve experienced. After writing and maybe even singing your lyrics, a weight will be lifted off your shoulders. You’ll feel less burdened with so many emotions. Writing song lyrics is a really good way to express yourself and feel yourself.

Play an instrument.

Play your heart out. Try expressing your emotions through music, and see where it takes you. Many people play an instrument to let go of feelings that they didn’t want to experience, because it can help a lot with doing so.

Learn a new language.

Flex off to your friends! I’m just kidding, but learning a new language will give you something to do during this time. Choose any language that looks interesting to you, and get started! It’s always good to learn, and learning can actually be fun when it comes to languages.

Play a board game with your family.

Board games are so out of date, but that’s a good reason why you’d feel good after playing one. If you are super bored and don’t know what to do, then play a board game with the household! At first, you may not want to, but after a while, your family and you will have a fun time. Spending time with your family will make you feel really good, whether it’s board games or not.

Take a break from electronic devices.

It sounds like classic advice, but it actually helps. Take a break from your phone, computer, tablet, and/or Ipads and give your eyes some rest. Try some of the ways to stay healthy during quarantine that was listed above. There’s no harm done if you try one of them and don’t like it because everything is an experience. Trying new things during this time is a good solution to boredom. It is also a good way to find out some things that make you happy, so when you’re feeling down, you can do those things to boost your mood.
